Our favourite churches

Welcome to our favourite churches!

Every member of the team here at National Churches Trust has chosen their favourite church.

In these strange times of isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, come and take a virtual journey with us and explore the churches that are dear to our hearts.

Which church does our Chief Exec swoon over? Which makes our Grants Officers happy? And where does our Support Officer for Wales escape to when she needs to get away? Read on and celebrate with us some of our most loved and interesting places of worship.

Every church has a story to tell.

All Saints, Kingston

The first King of England was crowned here; today it serves the community in many ways - worship, quiet contemplation, concerts, volunteering or just enjoying a slice of homemade cake.

St Mary, Ealing

From my attic window I can see the magnificent tower of St Mary's Ealing. It is a local landmark, at the centre of the local community and close to school, allotments and the Rose and Crown pub.

St Patrick, Patrington

'The Queen of Holderness' : a breathtaking mini cathedral with a glorious 55m spire that is seen for miles, so I always know where I am when I am biking round Holderness!

Holy Trinity, St Andrews

The centre of the change and drama during the Protestant Reformation. As a student, I walked past it every day for four years, and I went to several lovely carol services there.

St Helen, Ranworth

We spent several Easter Sundays here, I remember climbing the tower to enjoy views of the Norfolk Broads; experiences that nurtured my enjoyment for exploring old buildings.

Chapel, Tintagel Castle

Ancient stonework, grey cliffs and a sapphire sea - there is most definitely a special, mythical feeling to this small chapel sitting on the edge of the ruined Tintagel Castle.

Christ Church, Southgate

Near rural setting in a high density city, with great views of the church from the cricket pitch. An art lover’s delight, my daughter spent much time there colouring drawings of Rosetti's Angels.

St Peter, Thorpe Salvin

In rolling countryside, I love its 12th century carved font; with seasons in the farming year including a worker in a pointed hat warming his feet on a brazier after a day’s work!

St Nicholas, Burnage

Designed by Nugent Francis Cachemaille-Day; for me, a beautiful piece of 20th century modernist architecture. As Pesvner says 'a milestone in the history of church architecture in England'.

St Edith, Coates by Stow

The place where I fell in love with my future husband; a quiet space of peace and tranquillity standing forlorn in a field, yet hiding inside is one of the most spectacular rood lofts in the UK.

St Luke, Liverpool

When I lived in Liverpool, the ‘bombed out church’ was as much a landmark for everyone as the Liver Building - a central meeting point and great little oasis in the city.

KentTENTERDENStMildred(paulgillettCC-BY-SA2.0)1

St Mildred, Tenterden

The medieval tower dominates the skyline and can be seen for miles. A lively and friendly church with a calendar of exhibitions, its also close to some very good Kent vineyards!

St Bartholomew the Great, Smithfield

When you go through the old archway of 'St Bart's', you feel like you step back in time. Connected to the oldest hospital in London, it's a lovely refuge from busy London streets.

Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool

I love the amazing architecture demonstrating skilled craftsmanship. Being the largest cathedral in Britain, the tower gives incredible views across the city, to the Wirral and beyond.
